Pigeon House Mountain is located within Morton National Park, about 30 minutes drive south west from Ulladulla. The mountain was named by Captain James Cook for its distinctive, dominant shape. Aboriginal people, however, had a different take on it and named the mountain ‘Didhol’, which means a certain part of the female anatomy! It is one of the most impressive natural wonders in New South Wales.

The area surrounding Pigeon House offers a wealth of natural features, such as Shrouded Gods Mountain and the Byangee Walls. All have a number of walking tracks suitable for all abilities. However, the most rewarding climb of all is Pigeon House itself. At 720m above sea level, it is possible to climb safely and relatively easily to the summit (5km and around 4 hours round trip), although a certain level of fitness is required as it is quite steep in parts. The spectacular 360 degree panorama that awaits is more than worth the effort, with views encompassing surf beaches, mountains and river valley.
It is possible to drive to the base of the mountain and enjoy views of Pigeon House and its surrounds. The roads are suitable for all vehicles. Turn off the Princes
Highway at Wheelbarrow Road about 3km south of Burrill Lake to reach the car park, where there are barbeques, picnic tables and a toilet. The track to the top is also clearly marked. |
